The noises from the four Tables was loud, but quiet; for the watchful gazes of the teachers were looking all around. But as Professor Dumbledore entered the room, all fell silent. The students had heard of his big announcment today, and now it was the time to find out what it was. One boy, a sixth year, continued to speak in a hushed whisper to the boy next to him; but a look from Dumbledore silenced Tobias Charlton's friend.
"Now that I have your full attention," Dumbledore said slowly. "I wish to announce the coming of the Winter Ball. But," he paused, gaving at the second and first years around the Hall. "Only those of you of the Third Year and above are allowed to go." At this, groans and huffs came from those below the Third Year. A soft smile came to Dumbledore's lips. "Some other time, my friends, some other time." he motioned to them.
"You are free to visit Hogsmeade, those of you above Third Year, and gather together your clothes. I trust you can find some reasonably good clothes? We wouldn't want you wandering about in a dress when your a boy," Soft laughter arose as Dumbledore spoke. "Unless you wish to be embarrased before your friends, I do suggest you find a date. But now, feel free to do what you wish. Though, the dance is in a week." And with that, Dumbledore left; the after-noon sunshine poking through the windows.

Sirius Black sat surrounded by Gryffindors, a frown apread across his face, long fingers idly picking at the food before him. He wasn't hungry. He hadn't been properly hungry since...
Sighing, Sirius put the slice of toast back onto the plate, its place of residence, before gasting his dark gaze upwards, sweeping dark tresses from his eyes as he did so.
A hush fell suddenly, like a blanket, around him and Siirus suddenly notcied the prescence of his headmaster. He sat a little straighter, wondering what was forthcoming.
He listened carefully throughout the announcement, but his brow furrowed and frown deepened with every word. Dance... date... There had been rumours... he'd been planning for ages. Only days ago, those single two words, dance and date, would have amounted to one thing. Sadie.
Not now... not anymore....

James Potter nudged his friend 'You alright, mate?' he asked Sirius softly. It upset him to see Sirius so dejected and down, he frowned into his breakfast, the taste in his mouth becoming sour. James' black hair stud up at odd angles and his glasses framed his hazel eyes.
He risked a glance for Lily as he heard Dumbledore announced the up coming Dance. Who cared even if she was there? She'd be going to the Dance with that git in 6th Year. He frowned even deeper and looked at Sirius, trying to convey sympathy in his expression- he felt for his friend, he really did... He didn't know the full story yet and he didn't want to pry.. all he knew was Sirius Black was not his usual self.

"Yup," Sirius nodded, feigning a smile and forcing himself to pick up the toast. "Fine thanks - you?"
Whilst gazing at his friend, the boy brought the toast to his lips, parting them just in time to take a bite. It might as well have been cardboard. Sirius chewed despondently, trying to ignore the dry crumbs sticking to the roof of his mouth before setting the toast down again. "A dance..." he murmured, "How'd you fancy being my partner, James-ey boy?"

'I'm alright,' James replied gloomly. He watched as Sirius ate a piece of toast without much enthusiam.
He smiled a little, and batted his eyelashes at Sirius 'proposal' 'Go to the dance with /you/? Why of course!' he said, with mock enthusiasm 'Wow,' he said 'I'll be the envy of all the girls! Just don't get me drunk,' he finished dryly before taking a sip of tea, which, to his upmost disgust, burnt his tounge.

Sirius nodded, "Yeah..." he remarked, "You look it..."
He studied his friend as James replied, his answer laced with liberal amounts of sarcasm - yet his face remained still, in a frown ever-lasting. Not a trace of a smile tickled his drawn cheeks. Instead the boy snorted in dis-belief, "The envy of the girls? Don't think so... not if the other day's anything to go by... but whatever. I won't get you drunk..." Sirius went to trail off, but sudenly realised the implictions of James's comment, "You mean there's gonna be alchol?! GREAT!" A little colour adorned the ghostly robes of Sirius's face as he thought how drunk he could become...
Sitting back, he grabbed an apple, throwing it from hand to hand, "Maybe this dance'll cheer me up after all."

'No really,' James said 'I'm fine,' he speared a sausage with his fork and grinned. 'But I take it your not?'
He shrugged 'I wouldv'e thought there was alchol, and if not we can always bring some!' A smile split his face until he reaslised what Sirius had said then he sighed. 'Oh no you don't- don't go getting too drunk...' He sighed, it would be him and Remus who would have to get him to the GCR... Peter would be no use. But then, after what he'd heard had happened, maybe Sirius deserved to get drunk, at least a little. James sighed again and added 'At lease not without me!' To his comment.

Sirius nodded, eyeing the sausage warily. "Nope. I'm ok. Just like you," he replied, tearing his gaze from the sausage, before he showered the table with confetti of last night's dinner, "I'm fine."
He stretched his arms above his head, listening not just to James's words, but to his tone of voice, "You don't mean that," he muttered impatiently, before speaking again, a little louder, "What you mean is: C'mon Sirius, don't act like a twerp, don't get too drunk... You needn't worry. I won't get so legless I can't stumble back to the GCR... but if you really wanna get drunk with me, go ahead!"

'Just like me..' James repeated 'And of course I'm fine, so that means you are too... Great!' James nodded and listened as Sirius continued.
He waited a moment before replying 'Ok, maybe I do mean it a little like that, but you know what happens when you get drunk,' he shivered at the memories 'And sure it provokes some comical type things to happen but you also regret stuff,' he shrugged and for some reason glanced at Tobias, 'Then again,' he said, darkly 'I could do with some comedy...' he shook his head 'Just not /too/ legless? Yeah?' He hated to 'nag' and it wouldn't be the first time he'd nagged Sirius.

Sirius nodded - and remained that way through-out James's speech, nodding towards the end of every sentence - if not word. "Sure." he replied, when James had finished, "Whatever. Not too drunk. I understand, Mum, no worries."
The teen shrugged, joining James in glaring at Tobias, "Git," he muttered, "I know I regret some things happening when I'm out of it, but I really wouldn't regret hexing him..."

James laughed and patted Sirius on the head 'Theres a good boy!' he said, before returning to glare at Tobias. 'Ya know what, I don't think I'd regret hexing him either, jumped up little sod..' he frowned and started to mutter 'Thinks he's better than me and that he'll get Lily... Well...' He wandered off for a bit before coming back to Earth with an apologetic grin 'Sorry.' He said.

Sirius allowed himself to be patted, picking up an orange and juggling with it as he did so. He kept juggling as James ranted, and only shrugged as his friend apologised, "No, keep going. It'll help. And I like hearing it."

James laughed 'You like hearing it? What, the dulcet tones of my voice?' He shrugged 'Nah, I've finished now, s'just he gets the better of me, being all 'I'm older, and better, and yet I like someone 3 years younger, stupid idiot...' the muttering began again, 'Thing is he's probably right- Lily would prefer him and his maturity..Goddammit...' He smiled and and shrugged 'Like I said, I've finished now!' He grinned and watched as Sirius juggled 'Where'dya learn that?' He asked, in a bid to change the subject.

Sirius grunted, "No, dumb-ass! You. Insulting him. He deserves it.."
Again, sirius bowed his head to James's tyrade, allowing to wash other him, soothing his anger. "And this? I just.... learnt it by myself.... nowhere in particular..." The boy dismissed his tricks with a wave of the hand.

A young red-head sat eating her toast with a small, forced, smile on her face as she listened to her friends torture her with their favourite conversation topics: Black, Potter, homework, Black, the dance, Black. She rolled her eyes and nodded as the girl next to her told her what costume she would be wearing. This was of course Lily Evans, her emerald eyes were planted firmly on the piece of toast she was buttering for the umpteenth time. She couldn't wait to go back to Hogsmeade and pick out an outfit! She told herself sarcastically. She'd probably go as a cat or something, but then so would half the school. How about a butterfly, she smiled as she thought about charming her wings so that they'd fly. She leant her head in her hands and rubbed her ribs as the girl next to her jabbed her sharply in her side and asked her if she was even listening. It was quite apparent that she was not.
As the girl turned away, Lily was left once more to her thoughts and wondered if she had brought any clothes with her that she could make anything out of rather than buy it...........bad idea actually it'd probably end up looking like shredded bedsheets. One thing was for definate she wanted a mask, this was her first masquerade dance and she was going to make the most of it. She would probably go alone, naturally, since Potter may ask her and she would say no, although things had been worse than normal between them at the moment so she wasn't even certain that he'd ask her. Oh well, she could talk with her friends about dates later but right now she decided to eat the toast that by now was very well buttered.
