Lily sat in the 3 broomsticks nursing her second glass of water. The 13 year olds hair was tied back in a white ribbon with one red coil weaving it’s way down her pale cheek to splash onto her white jumper that she had received for Christmas. Her emerald eyes glanced at the table and back to her misty glass. A soft sigh escaped her lips as her mind glazed over with thoughts. Thoughts of other people, although she might have fallen out with Tobias and have a horrid sister, Lily felt these downsides paled in comparison with some she could name. So here she was, Lily Evans, thinking about all the people she cared about.
Firstly there was Anya, she had just found out that the boy she had a crush on, had a crush already, on another boy. And that was just recently, before that her parents had left her on a doorstep and well…that was just the beginning. Lily cared deeply for Anya, as they had been friends a long time, her first real friend at Hogwarts. Lily’s pale, freckled face looked out the window to the cold world outside and a sigh escaped her pink lips.
And then there was Remus, the boy that Anya’s affections had focused upon. He was a bit of a mess at the moment, and with good reason. His Dad had killed his mum in a fire, which had been plastered all over the most widely read wizarding newspaper. Then he had a necklace stolen from him, which his Mum had given him causing a fight in the hallway of Hogwarts. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, he’d developed feelings for Sirius and Sirius hadn’t given him a proper answer. Poor boy, Lily thought sadly. Although he seemed to be taking it all in his strides. Calm, cool and collected was Remus Lupin. Lily really respected him for that and had never known anyone quite as brave as Remus.
What about Regulus? His head was floating around in her mind’s eyes too. His brother hated him, and so did his brother’s ex, for some unknown reason. Apparently Reggie did something to them both, but Lily wasn’t clear on what that was. After all this trauma, he tried to kill himself by hanging himself from a tree. Luckily that had been intervened by Lily and some other 3rd year Gryffindors. She was still worried about the younger boy, even if he had lost his memory, what if it came back suddenly?
Sirius lurked in the back of Lily’s brain like a nagging sensation and next to him was Sadie. Something had gone on between them and Reggie too. It was like some un-talked about crime. Obviously Regulus had done something but what exactly? Sirius was in agony over Sadie, that much was true and now Remus liked him too. Peter’s affection was weird but your best friend /liking/ you? Lily could only imagine what that was like. Although somehow it didn’t seem that weird to the 13 year old girl; Remus /liking/ Sirius. They were always together and well…it really wasn’t her business, that much was true.
The most confusing one was James Potter. His face stood out in her mind, but in a different way then before. Before it had been ‘what prank is he going to pull now’ or ‘where is he so I can stay away from him’ but something significant had changed. James had been right about Tobias Charlton and had comforted Lily after they had ‘split.’ That must have been hard not to gloat as well, especially as Lily had been so stubborn and horrible to Potter and Black. It was /nice/ to talk to James, he made her smile. It was like … she was floating when she was alone, but with James she could truly soar.
Lily Evans sat and rested her elbow lazily on the rough wooden table. Her head was facing the window and to the un-trained eye, anyone would’ve thought that this young red head was gazing out the window, but no, Lily was consumed in thought. Thought for other people, even those that she wasn’t meant to like, and so Lily matured that day, not physically but mentally, she put other people first and so she sat, her thoughts trying to organise themselves into some coherent order.
