Magical Creatures (Haven't used Adair in a while)

It was a rainy day, so Care Of Magical Creatures was being held inside Professor Adair's room. Now there were some instresting things in Professor Tristian Adair's room. The skin of a Basilisk, skulls of Hippogryffs and dragon fangs and claws.

There was a Moon pendente that he kept on his desk, not to mention a claw of some creature. Adair's old owl rested on his perch and the Crup, Kamali, lay in his basket.

Adair walked up and down the isles. "Right, since todays outside lesson has been... put off until futher notice. I've decide we can do an open dissussion... ask questions... debate... whatever."

He went back to the front of the class giving them a somewhat stern look. "Well....?"

[Anya Delioncour]

This happened to catch the attention of one third year Gryffindor, who had been busy looking at a book. "Sir? I think, since you said we could have a debate, we should talk about werewolve's rights." Ah, it seemed Ms Anya Delioncour hadn't quite given up on her plans to make life easier for Lycans.

A Slytherin nearby, rolled her eyes. "Whats there to debate about? They're insane monsters, enough said." This came from Celestia Moonshadows. While the 'School Slut' had been acting different lately, she was still going out of her way to be a bitch towards Anya. After all- They were enemies, not only on the quidditch field.

((*Grins* You just opened the perfect path for Jayna! Hope you don't mind!)

Standing next to Celestia, Jayna Marsh gasped at the mention of werewolves. Hearing the girl next to her comment she turned and looked at her oddly. In her mind she wondered whether to agree with her or not. There was the fact that under all the smelly (Hehe from her experience of course. Sorry Remmy!) wolf fur, there was a real life person. Her mind swirled. It's amazing what the mention of a werewolf debate could do to a person.

Quietly she half raised her hand. Her face was red and she couldn't believe what she was going to say. "I agree," she managed a small glare at Celestia. "That would be a good idea, I mean we don't talk about it much." And with a small gasp she quieted down, seeming to become smaller as she shrank away.

Professor Adair raised his eyebrows at Anya's comment and smiled. As a staff member he knew about Remus' condition. "Werewolve's rights huh?" He sat on top of his desk and thought for a moment.

"Very well, a very good topic. A very good topic indeed, for both sides will have many opnions. Tell me Miss. Delioncour, What is your opnion...whatwould you do to give them their rights?"

[Anya Delioncour]

Anya shrugged. "They should be treated like humans. It's not their fault. It's just a disease. I know in the muggle world, they're having similar problems over those with AIDS. It's the same thing. Those muggles and our werewolves are treated like monsters. Just because they are different. I mean- A law just recently passed, saying that werewolves have to get a license to reproduce. But that's stupid. As far as studies have shown, the Lycan genes aren't passed on. And whats with the whole 'They can't be teachers' things? Are people afraid that the Lycan in question is going to bite their children, though they are locked away within two days of a full moon? It isn't right. The ministry is putting itself at risk, because over sixty percent of the Magic worlds poverty and homeless? They're all werewolves. Which makes it even easier for Lycan's to make more of themselves. Though they don't mean too. Even while in human form, they can't controll the wolf easily. That's why the ministry refuses to acknowledge the fact that, while Werewolves in wolf form are dangerous, any other time, they /are/ human. The reson why in human form they attack the ministry members, is because the ministry angers them to such extent, that the wolf distantly gets upset...." She trailed off, realizing that while to some people that sounded like babble, to others, who kinda understood, she knew too much to know that from a textbook.

Adair nodded, "Very well researched Anya, very well indeed." He smiled at her, "You are right... it not their fault, and many do live in poverty."

"And in some countires, like Romaina they are forced to live in mountians in packs and have almost no human qualities at all."

He turned back to Anya, "So how would you propose to give werewovles their rights?"

<sup>Lily Evans was sat next to her best friend, Anya Delioncour, and had been, unusually, quiet during the entire lesson. The red headed third year had listened attentively to Anya's speech about werewolves and their rights and a newfound respect shone fiercely in the young Gryffindor's jade eyes. Although this class had not turned into a general debate, yet, it was simply a matter of time until the two sides were created. One for and one against. Lily was quite a good public speaker, which may have been why she was quite at ease to speak her mind to James Potter in public on more than one occasion however, she could sense just how passionately Anya spoke on this topic and so elected her brunette friend the unoffocial, unspoken leader of the 'For' team. Soon, when a general debate did erupt, it would be down to the two leaders no doubt to verbalise their own views, representing the rest of the class, and who could do that better than Anya?

<sup>In the corner of the room one Slytherin third year glared rather contemptuously at Professor Adair, a sneer scarcely concealed by the young wizard. How a teacher could lend himself to this foolish debate was anyones guess. Severus Snape was not a fan of werewolves and had reason to believe that Remus Lupin was in fact of lycan descent, of course he could never prove it, and it wasn't until a few years later, that it would become almost an obsession, a hobby, along with trying to get those four mud blood loving fools expelled.

The pale young man lazily raised his hand in the air, waiting for Anya to stop her rather long, and rather tedious, speech about how werewolves were provoked into their rampages.

Boo hoo, someone get me a tissue.

As the Professor spoke about Romania and asked Anya yet another question, Snape snorted, a hollow kind of sound that barely reached the ears of the student in front of him. Without waiting for a sign that he could speak from the teacher, Snape called out before Anya could answer the latest question.

"Rights, indeed. They should all be locked up, out of harms way and ours. Rights for werewolves? Has the world gone mad? Honestly, what about human rights? What about the ones that say everyone should have a chance to live without fear? If you knew a werewolf was living next door to you, would you be without fear? I think not. You seem to forget, Miss Delioncour," Severus drawled, "that we are not talking about werewolves in their human form, we are talking about great brutes that would sooner tear out your throat than talk about some kind of rights." His dark, grey eyes were calm and projected a lazy challenge, it's unspoken meaning echoing hollowly around the room as he focused upon the young girl sat at the front.

"Reproducing, what a vile thought, but I shall continue with my defense anyway." Severus said, his hands coming to steeple on the desk in front of him, as his cold eyes bored into other students until they turned away from his steady gaze, only a few returned the look within the class. "I pity the poor creature that dabbles with a werewolf, just imagine if you are the beasts mate, you are it's mate for life, as wolves are. What if the werewolf transforms one evening? What happens to the baby? Now, a werewolf isn't in it's human frame of mind when it transforms, I don't suppose many of us would what with the agonizing pain the transformations put the creature through, but it isn't it's human self. What if it finds the child, what if then the offspring is bitten and left with a mark as gruesome as it's parent? What future does this child have? None. And all because we let it's parent reproduce in the first place." Snape said with a cold, calm dripping off his words, it sounded clinical, as though he felt nothing whilst speaking, nothing at all.

"Unprovoked attacks are all very well, and perhaps the wizarding community does single out these individuals, but I would like to raise the classes attention to all those attacks that people seem to brush under the carpet when talking about werewolf rights. There were several in 1653, 3 muggle children killed on the spot and five Aurors bitten. Now I ask you, what could have enraged these beasts so much that they destroyed 8 lives? They simply came from the forest on top of the village, four of them, and proceeded with their actions, and you want to let people like this into society? And the events in the late 1800s, there are several different accounts of vampires and werewolves, although some are fairly garbled, though there are three, one written by one, Van Helsing I seem to recall, about werewolves entering the village on the orders of some higher power, biting as many people as possible to swell the ranks of their wolven troops. I hasten to mention the exile of werewolves was done for a reason, many of them live in the mountains because they were dangerous to people, if you want a world full of flea ridden creatures that do nothing more than bite others to make their lives torture then give them their rights, let them into society and see what good it does you." The pale boy finished with a calculated finality, his voice as flinty as his eyes, his words cutting into the silence and dieing.

(Hope you don't mind that I made him kind of a bit all-knowing. It's not that he knows everything, it's just that he has researched this quite a bit in order to catch Remus Lupin and his fellow marauders, although he may have got some things wrong in there if anyone wishes to correct him. So yeah, there ye go, tell me if you want me to change it or anything, I'm still trying to get the whole Snape thing right, especially after HBP. -Shudders- Anyway, I shall stop Oocing now. Heh.)</sup>

[Anya Delioncour]

Anya whirled around in her seat, and gave Snape a look of uttmost hatred. "Yes, most werewolves in wolf form, can not tell right from wrong. But it isn't impossible. If you were the one that a werewolf was bound to in human form, then the wolf would recognize you. As long as the werewolf loves you- because love if such a strong emotion, it can counter almost anything- {she sounds like Dumbledore now... xD} The wolf will not attack. And if the wolf will not attack you, then you are almost certainly going to be able to restrain them. Even if you are just close friends with a Lycan-" A strange look passed over Anya's face at that, but she quickly pushed it away. "You should still be able to 'tame the wolf', you might say.

Secondly, a werewolf will not attack it's own young. Afterall, wolves- Most of the time- do not. Yet again, they will recognize the scent of the child, or the scent of his or herself on the child. They will veer away from that path, and let the child be. Surely someone with your amount of expertise would have realised that, Mister Snape." There was an icey edge to her voice, and the Gryffindor's glare hadn't lightened one bit. Sev wasn't the only one doing reasearch.

"And lastly, those unprovoked attacks were years ago. All the 'Higher Power' Bullshit- Er, sorry Professor- has gone down the drain. But-" She sighed. "I fear it might come back. As much as I am for werewolve rights? I believe one werewolf should be taken down. The head of the main pack in britain. Fenrir Greyback. {I think I got that right. xD} He is the one who has bitten almost all of the new werewolves in the past fifteen years."

Interested in the conversation, Jayna sat quietly playing with her hands. Her hair covered her face as she looked down, and, although she did not look it, she was listening with the utmost attention.

"Werewolf rights......," She paused, remembering a dear old friend of hers. Now loud enough for all to hear she spoke up.

"Werewolves should have rights, but they should be limited. In my village years ago one of us was a werewolf. Since we were all so close the village gave him the same rights as everyone else. I don't even think they locked him up on the full moon. I was little and didn't know any better, so me and my brothers went out on a full moon. He attacked me. The villagers heard and we had to......," She choked, not being able to say that one word. Quietly she looked at her lap and sighed.

<sup>Snape's nostrils flared, the only sign that he was becoming most vexed with Anya's answer, however his face remained calm, vowing that he would make Anya crack by the end of this little debate, and he himself would be the pinnacle of calm. He almost flinched at being called 'Mr Snape,' however he restrained himself and merely stared at her unblinkingly as she continued to unwind the seeds of doubt he had planted in most people's minds.

"Tame the wolf?" Snape rolled his grey eyes, the circular motion causing him to sigh heavily. "Love is not all that strong, I'm sure you of all people would realise that, Miss Delioncour." The pale boy said with a raised eyebrow, quickly he moved on. "Lots of people can lie, can they not? One can fake an emotion such as love. After all, if someone is a besotted fool, it's not too hard to convince them that you too are in love with them, it's what they want to hear, and so they will believe it, I'm sure many people would be able to confirm this for me." Snape then moved on, his voice not raising as he continued battering Anya's vocalized defense.

"However, you speak with such confidence, tell me, Miss Delioncour, how do you know that one might tame the wolf?" He asked, the sound of his voice lingering in the air for a few moments of sizzling tension, before he continued in the same drawling manner. "Unprovoked attacks being years ago, hmm I'm sure, needless to say, the families with lycan descendants are no doubt still in pain from this ancient history as you would so lightly classify it under. I'm sure these families would be most pleased to hear that you take this condition so lightly." Snape said before a low chuckle rumbled in his throat, his eyes still the blank mirror of emotion they had always been.

"You believe in werewolf rights and yet you think one of them should be killed, what a hypocrite you are, Anyankta. If one should have these rights, why not the others? Ah, yes, because some are more vicious then others. Although the hierarchy of werewolves has been considered cruel, does no one consider the fact that it is the highest werewolf that keeps the others in line? Since we destroyed it, has this Greyback not become more vicious? Have more attacks happened in the past 20 years or so? I fail to see why anyone should trust something that goes out of it's mind once a month and would willingly subject others to the same fate."

Severus paused then, glancing around to find the source of the gentle noise, his ears pinpointed the girl near Celestia, Jayna, he believed her name to be. A quiet girl and it was odd for her to speak out on this subject when he was quite sure he had heard her only speak a handful of times before. Snape almost snorted again at this little anecdote, however he willed his facial features to show no contempt, yet sympathy for the girl he barely knew. This facial expression was new to Snape and so he had a little difficulty producing it, however it seemed to have the desired effect and Severus continued his onslaught.

"You see? The experiment has been tried and tested, and it has failed. You may like to think otherwise, but giving werewolves the same rights as humans does not work, no matter how close a society is, or how closely you supervise people. It cannot and will not work, if people continue to consider this absurdity as an option, who knows what kind of future we will be lead to. People are always campaigning against one thing or another, why, when the world is perfectly fine, do people feel they need to change it? Has anyone in this room had a werewolf come up to them and say they feel abused? Say they feel mistreated? Say they want to be treated like humans? Perhaps werewolves think that we are the ones that need to be saved, and they are being really very kind when they bite us." He said in fake gratitude, before he scoffed, "After all, no one here has had the misfortune to meet such a creature, other than poor Jayna over there." Snape added gravely as his gaze flickered back to Anya, who would, no doubt, have some smart arse remark to fire back at him. His grey eyes darted once to Lily Evans, sat beside her best friend, who was being oddly silent during the whole debate. She was one of the more outspoken people in the class, so why was she being silent all of a sudden. The minute she turned around he understood, he could read her like a book, as most people could when she felt strong emotions. Her eyes gave everything away, not a good trait, he realised. In that glance he saw a blazing fire of hatred, not for him, he realised, but for what he stood for, and a fierce pride for Anya, cheering her on at every turn.

Well, I suppose if we give rights to her sort, we might as well give rights to the whole damn world, werewolves and all.

He sniffed disdainfully and spoke once more before silence fell upon the room. "If we give rights to these werewolves, who's next. Like I said before, people always need some crusade, some way to make the world a better place. Will we decide to set all the house elves free? Maybe we'll let the giants back in, or perhaps some Boggarts could come and inhabit our towns, after all, after you cross that hazy line, who is to say what is beast and what is man?" Severus leant back in his chair, his hands resting on his chest, rising and falling gently.</sup>

Professor Adair stood up from the desk and eyed his class. He had let two students duke it out, listening to both their defenses. Both had a point. Both were well researched.

"A very good point Mr. Snape, people can lie about their emontions and werewolves can be quite good at that. It is also said that during a certain part of the month a werewolf chooses a mate, and will in fact rape its victim. Another good point you brought up is, if we give the werewolves their rights, who will be next in line? Giants? House Elves? We can never tell."

He then turned to Anya, "But you also brought up a good point Miss Delioncour sometimes the wolf can recoginze the one he or she loves, and that most of the time they will recoginze their young."

He offered a breif smile to both students, "10 points to Gryffindor and Slytherin." He eyed the class, "Does anyone else have any other opnions on this matter or any other matter?"

OoC//I hope you all won't mind, this post is a little disturbing, like me

BiC// A black-haired Gryffindor sat listening attentively. He knew a lot on werewolf facts, but then again, he knew a lot about almost any other magical creature. He loved reading about them, knowing them, learning them, so when the discussion of werewolves popped out of the blue, he was not even ruffled.

Icy blue optics narrowing slightly at the different facts piled out by the two ‘debaters’ Jason Pattew could hardly make up his mind whom to agree with. They both had hard cold facts, and both were just as strong in figure of speech. They were right in both ways, but they also had their flaws. Hardly hesitating, Jason rose to his feet and decided it was time he gave his opinion.
“Based on what Mister Snape had said, I strongly disagree with the fact that love is not all that strong. There have been researches and it is found that though primarily a true wolf while in wolf form, there is some proof that the werewolf retains enough knowledge to assist his killing; recognition of victims, evasion of traps, and human cunning have all been seen on werewolf cases. If that is the case, why not love? There is truth in your words when you say that love is an emotion one may lie about, then whoever that has been a fool enough to be besotted deserved to die, excuse my bluntness Professor. But is it not true, that should a person get so lost in love, so much so he or she was willing to turn a blind eye at the fact that the ‘lover’ they thought loved them is saying the truth, they do not deserve the chance to live, since everybody has friends and families, is it not possible for these relations to convince him or her? Your point of view on the emotion is not merely for werewolves; even those around us are dangerous. Who knows, somebody you know and loved could right now be plotting your death. Isn’t it slightly unfair to judge the werewolves so harshly on something that is of human nature?”

Jason smirked at the last sentence. Human or beast, beast or human? A game of confusion, of uncertainty, well, two can play that game, or in this case, three.
“You also mention that Miss Delioncour is a hypocrite, for she mentioned killing one werewolf while subsequently debating for the rights of others. She is no hypocrite. There is an ancient code of that of the relationship between Alpha and Beta werewolves. As we all know, werewolves are pack creatures, just like their namesake. The Alpha wolf is the main biter, the main source of the werewolf hierarchy. The Beta wolves are its followers, those who have been bitten, the victims of the Alpha wolf. It is said that if a bitten victim, a Beta has not have the taste of human blood, the curse is reversible by killing the pack leader, the Alpha wolf, in this case, Fenrir Greyback. It may not be much to go on, but it is worth the try. Thus, what Miss Delioncour said is not hypocrisy, but it has an ounce of truth in it, one that most humane people hold on to, in hopes that the werewolves may be saved, and not condemned by the law. They say the werewolf is a beast, than what about us humans? Are we no less beast since we hunt these poor creatures down and kill them yet not find, research a cure for them? Who is the beast, the werewolf, or the humans?” Sitting down once more, Jason felt satisfaction, but also a deep unease. He had touched on a subject many avoid, and feared, the subject of human nature. Did we create such monsters in us? One that can rival that of a werewolf?

Professor Adair raised an eyebrow at Jason's speech. This boy was one of his best students. Always had perfect essays, almost always knew the answer to the questions asked in class. So there was no suprise when this boy jumped in the debate, armed and ready.

During Jason's speech he nodded at some of the things he said. He had also made very good points, it was probably one of the best debates he had heard. "Yes Mr. Pattew, an excellent point, it is unfair to judge werewolves on something that is human nature. Then again it is human nature that makes so many judge them..."

"And yes, we are like beasts, hunting them. Trapping them...having them register at the Ministry. We should be the ones to find a cure...yet many are to afraid to lend a helping hand. You have brought up a very good point."
